Short History of The Station and Goods Wagon

Hampsthwaite Station was built around 1864 on the NER Ripley to Pateley Bridge branch line. It was occupied by a few Stationmasters during that time. Following its closure in 1950 as a station the property was put to use as a Bunk Barn for inner city children and scouting holidays.

The present owners have lived there almost 30 years and during that time the former station has undergone several stages of restoration and modernization to make it into a family home for 21st century and ‘The Platform’ accommodation was added in 2011. Sitting alongside the Old Station on the original platform now providing the perfect Station Staycation.

The Carriage had been sitting in a dilapidated state in the woodland cutting.
It’s original use was a dry goods wagon. Built probably around 1930 but past its useful life after about 20 years, removed from its carriage wheels and abandoned at the side of the track. You see many of these abandoned wagons in farmer’s fields around the country used for storage. Many are now completely dilapidated with only a rusted frame and rotting timbers.

It was brought up to its current position closer to the station in 2018 and thence 2 years of sympathetic restoration carried out by its skilled and imaginative owners.
